You've become a British citizen — congratulations. Now you legally need to surrender your Indian passport. Here's exactly how to do it from the UK.

Once you acquire British citizenship (or any foreign citizenship), Indian law automatically terminates your Indian citizenship. You are legally required to surrender your Indian passport — using it after acquiring foreign citizenship is illegal and can cause serious problems at Indian immigration.
The surrender process is done through VFS Global in the UK and results in a surrender certificate, which you'll need if you want to apply for an OCI card later.
⚠️ Don't delay this. Some people keep using their Indian passport after getting British citizenship, thinking nobody will notice. Indian immigration systems are increasingly cross-referencing databases. Getting caught can result in your Indian passport being impounded, fines, and complications with future OCI applications.
This confuses almost everyone, and the rules have changed recently:
For most new British citizens, the surrender certificate has been sufficient for OCI applications. However, recent updates from the Indian government suggest that a renunciation certificate may now also be required for new OCI applications. The situation has been changing, so it's important to check the latest requirements before you apply.
Our advice: Start with the surrender process (it's simpler and faster). If you're told you also need renunciation for your OCI application, we can help with that too. Many clients have successfully applied for OCI with just the surrender certificate.
Fill in the surrender application on the Passport Seva portal. You'll need your Indian passport number, British passport details, and naturalisation certificate number.
Book an appointment at your nearest VFS Global centre (London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, etc.).
Bring your printed application, Indian passport (original), British passport, naturalisation certificate, photos, and address proof. Your Indian passport will be cancelled (they punch holes in it or stamp it) and returned to you along with a receipt.
The surrender certificate is typically issued within 4-6 weeks. It's either posted to you or available for collection. Keep this safe — you'll need it for your OCI application.
Once you have your surrender certificate, you can:
💡 Save with a bundle: Most new British citizens need surrender + OCI + PAN card. Our New British Citizen bundle covers all three for £249 (saving £48 vs. doing them separately).
No. India does not allow dual citizenship. Your Indian citizenship is automatically terminated when you acquire British citizenship. Continuing to use your Indian passport is illegal.
You can still surrender — you'll need to file a police report for the lost passport and provide an affidavit. The process takes a bit longer but is still possible.
The surrender certificate typically arrives within 4-6 weeks of your VFS appointment.
Not on your Indian passport (it's being cancelled). You can apply for an e-visa on your British passport if you need to travel urgently.
We handle the complete surrender application — online form, document preparation, and VFS appointment guidance. Or get the Surrender + OCI bundle for £199.
