How to Surrender Your Indian Passport After Getting British Citizenship

You've become a British citizen — congratulations. Now you legally need to surrender your Indian passport. Here's exactly how to do it from the UK.

Once you acquire British citizenship (or any foreign citizenship), Indian law automatically terminates your Indian citizenship. You are legally required to surrender your Indian passport — using it after acquiring foreign citizenship is illegal and can cause serious problems at Indian immigration.

The surrender process is done through VFS Global in the UK and results in a surrender certificate, which you'll need if you want to apply for an OCI card later.

⚠️ Don't delay this. Some people keep using their Indian passport after getting British citizenship, thinking nobody will notice. Indian immigration systems are increasingly cross-referencing databases. Getting caught can result in your Indian passport being impounded, fines, and complications with future OCI applications.

Surrender vs. Renunciation — what's the difference?

This confuses almost everyone, and the rules have changed recently:

For most new British citizens, the surrender certificate has been sufficient for OCI applications. However, recent updates from the Indian government suggest that a renunciation certificate may now also be required for new OCI applications. The situation has been changing, so it's important to check the latest requirements before you apply.

Our advice: Start with the surrender process (it's simpler and faster). If you're told you also need renunciation for your OCI application, we can help with that too. Many clients have successfully applied for OCI with just the surrender certificate.

Documents needed for surrender

📋 Surrender document checklist

  1. Indian passport (original) — the one you're surrendering. Even if it's expired, you need it.
  2. British passport (original + photocopy) — proof of your new citizenship.
  3. British naturalisation certificate (original + photocopy) — issued by the Home Office when you became a British citizen.
  4. Completed application form — available on the VFS or Passport Seva website.
  5. Passport-size photos — standard UK passport size (35×45mm).
  6. UK address proof — utility bill, bank statement, or council tax bill.

Step-by-step process

Common questions

Can I keep my Indian passport after getting British citizenship?

No. India does not allow dual citizenship. Your Indian citizenship is automatically terminated when you acquire British citizenship. Continuing to use your Indian passport is illegal.

What if I lost my Indian passport?

You can still surrender — you'll need to file a police report for the lost passport and provide an affidavit. The process takes a bit longer but is still possible.

How long does surrender take?

The surrender certificate typically arrives within 4-6 weeks of your VFS appointment.

Can I travel to India during the surrender process?

Not on your Indian passport (it's being cancelled). You can apply for an e-visa on your British passport if you need to travel urgently.
