Your OCI is linked to an old passport, hasn't been renewed, or you're not sure if it's still valid. Here's exactly what you can and can't do.

This is one of the most common questions we get from NRI families in the UK. You've got a new British passport, your OCI sticker is in the old passport, and you want to know: can I still travel to India?
The short answer depends on your specific situation. Let's break it down.
Technically, you should update your OCI to your new passport before travelling. However, in practice, if you carry all three documents together — your old passport (with OCI sticker), your new passport, and the OCI booklet — Indian immigration will usually let you through.
This is not officially guaranteed. Immigration officers have discretion, and you may face questioning or delays. Airlines may also ask questions at check-in. The safest approach is always to update before travelling.
What to carry if you must travel before updating:
1. New UK passport (current, valid) — this is your travel document
2. Old UK passport (cancelled but with OCI sticker) — proof of OCI
3. OCI booklet — the separate card/booklet you received
Keep all three easily accessible during check-in and immigration.
The online passport update (Miscellaneous Services) takes 5-6 weeks. During this time, carry the same three documents as Scenario 1. Having the application confirmation/receipt can also help if questioned.
If you don't have an OCI card at all, you cannot enter India visa-free. You need to apply for an Indian e-visa on your British passport. E-visas are processed within 72 hours and are a good temporary solution while you apply for OCI.
Under current rules, you need one physical re-issue after getting a new passport after age 20. Until you do this, carry old passport + new passport + OCI booklet. Submit for re-issue as soon as possible — it involves a VFS appointment and takes 4-8 weeks.
For children under 20, only an online update is needed (not a physical re-issue). Immigration is generally more lenient with children's documents. Carry the child's old passport, new passport, and OCI booklet. Submit the free online update as soon as possible.
If you're travelling soon and your OCI situation is complicated, the quickest solution is an Indian e-visa. British passport holders can apply online and receive approval within 72 hours (often faster). E-visas are valid for tourism, business visits, and family visits.
Types of e-visa available:
We can help you with e-visa applications as part of our Indian Visiting Visa service (£129).
If you only need to link new passport details and don't need a physical re-issue, use the OCI portal's "Miscellaneous Services" option. It's free and processed within 5-6 weeks. This is sufficient for under-20s and for anyone who has already done their first post-20 re-issue.
Required once after getting a new passport after age 20. Costs approximately £30 total. Involves a VFS appointment. You'll get a new OCI sticker in your new passport. Takes 4-8 weeks.
OCI update/renewal service — we handle the online update or VFS re-issue application. Or if you need OCI from scratch, our full application service is £149.
